Llafranc, Calella & Tamariu

The Golden Triangle of Palafrugell’s prime coves

Three coves on the Palafrugell coast — Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell and Tamariu — form the most coveted stretch of the central Costa Brava. They share pine cliffs, clear water and the Camí de Ronda coastal path, but each has a distinct character and a distinct buyer. Here is how they compare.

Llafranc

Llafranc is the elegant, gently glamorous one — a graceful seafront promenade, a small marina and a sociable, refined atmosphere that has earned it the nickname "the St-Tropez of the Costa Brava". It suits buyers who want a chic but understated beach base with a little life, and hillside villas here capture some of the coast’s best views back over the bay.

Calella de Palafrugell

Calella de Palafrugell is the postcard fishing village: whitewashed arches (voltes), llaüt boats drawn up on the sand, and the famous Cap Roig botanical gardens and summer festival on the headland. It is the most photographed and among the most protected of the coves, car-light and authentic. It suits buyers who want genuine village charm over amenities and buzz.

Tamariu

Tamariu is the smallest and most discreet of the three — a tiny cove framed by umbrella pines, with a short seafront and a fraction of the supply. It is the connoisseur’s choice, prized precisely for its scale and tranquillity, and stock rarely comes to market. Because it is not separately indexed, treat any price figure as indicative and judge each property on its own merits and position.

Choosing — and the licence point

In short: Llafranc for refined, sociable beach living; Calella for authentic, car-light village charm; Tamariu for peace and scarcity. All three are tightly held, so the right home often comes through off-market access. On rentals, note that Palafrugell suspended new tourist-licence processing and sits above the legal ceiling — a new HUTG cannot be relied upon, so buy a property that already holds a valid, transferable licence if letting matters, and verify it before purchase.

Frequently asked questions

How much does property cost in Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell?

Llafranc averages around €5,675/m² and Calella de Palafrugell around €5,144/m² asking in 2026 (idealista) — among the highest on the Costa Brava. The wider Palafrugell municipality is much cheaper (the inland town is around €1,934/m²), so always look at the cove, not the municipal average.

How much does property cost in Tamariu?

Tamariu is the smallest and most exclusive of the three coves, and it is not separately indexed by idealista, so there is no clean published average. In practice prime Tamariu stock trades broadly in line with or above Llafranc and Calella — indicatively in the €5,000–€6,000/m² range and higher for first-line — but treat that as a guide and confirm against current listings.

What is the difference between Llafranc, Calella and Tamariu?

Llafranc is the elegant, gently glamorous one — a promenade and a marina feel, sometimes called the "St-Tropez of the Costa Brava". Calella de Palafrugell is the postcard fishing village of white arches and llaüt boats, home to the Cap Roig gardens and festival, the most authentic and protected. Tamariu is the tiny, hidden, pine-framed cove — the connoisseur’s choice for tranquillity and scarcity.

Which of the three should I buy in?

Choose Llafranc for refined, sociable beach living with a promenade; Calella de Palafrugell for authentic, car-light village charm; and Tamariu for peace, privacy and the smallest, most exclusive setting. All three are tightly held and supply is scarce, so the right home often comes through off-market access.

Can I let a property in the Palafrugell coves as a holiday rental?

Only with an existing valid tourist licence (HUTG). Palafrugell suspended the processing of new tourist-dwelling licences and sits above the legal ceiling, so a new licence cannot be relied upon. Buy a property that already holds a transferable HUTG if letting matters, and verify its status with the Ajuntament de Palafrugell and a local lawyer before purchase.
