Fires de Sant Narcís de Girona: A Celebration of Tradition and Community

Girona, a picturesque city in Catalonia, Spain, comes alive in late October to celebrate "Fires de Sant Narcís," which is the Fiesta Mayor, or the main festival of the city. This vibrant and lively celebration spans approximately five days, culminating on October 29th, the feast day of Saint Narcissus, the city's patron saint. While the festival holds deep religious significance, it has evolved into a grand cultural and community event that showcases Girona's rich heritage.

The Legend of Saint Narcissus

The Fires de Sant Narcís takes its name from Saint Narcissus, who is not only the patron saint of Girona but also the central figure in a famous legend. According to the tale, in the year 1285, during a period of conflict, French troops led by Philippe the Bold entered the city of Girona and desecrated the tomb of Saint Narcissus in the Basilica of Sant Fèlix. Legend has it that, from the saint's sepulcher, swarmed an army of flies that bit and afflicted thousands of French soldiers with a deadly disease. Girona was thereby spared the siege and the French troops.

Fires de Sant Narcís Festivities

The Fires de Sant Narcís is a celebration that encompasses a wide array of popular, family-oriented, and cultural events. Here are some of the traditional activities that make this festival special:

1. Correfoc: The festival kicks off with the mesmerizing "correfoc," or "fire run." In this exhilarating event, costumed participants parade through the streets, breathing life into dragons and other mythical creatures, all while setting off fireworks and firecrackers.

2. Fiesta Castellera: A highlight of the festivities is the "fiesta castellera," where human towers, or "castells," are constructed by teams of daring participants who climb on top of each other to create awe-inspiring human towers, showcasing balance and teamwork.

3. Gigantes and Capgrossos: Enormous papier-mâché figures known as "gigantes" and "capgrossos" are a common sight during the festival. These towering figures represent various historical and cultural characters and parade through the streets, delighting both children and adults.

Barraques and More

One of the most anticipated aspects of the Fires de Sant Narcís is the presence of "Barraques." These are vibrant, temporary stalls and tents set up throughout the city, offering a variety of culinary delights, including traditional Catalan dishes, international cuisine, and local specialties. It's a gastronomic journey that complements the cultural festivities perfectly.
